What to do when your baby is overwhelmed?

Qudo Founder Nicky Bateman on how, when and why to do the Embracing Squeeze.

Perhaps it’s when you put your baby in a car seat? Or in their cot?

Or maybe it’s being separated from you, however briefly.

Babies have primitive reflexes – which develop in the womb and help prepare them for the ‘real’ world. But any backward movement can trigger these reflexes and the baby thinks it’s falling, not safe. Cue arching of backs, flinging of arms, hands open and crying to get your attention.

What to do? Well, there’s a technique called The Embracing Squeeze, which can help any baby/toddler/child/adult who feels threatened or overwhelmed. It’s simple to do. You use deep touch to settle the nervous system.

Start with an arm or a leg, or even a hand or foot. Use your whole hand or both hands to hold the foot or hand for seven to eight seconds. You want a hold that is deep, soft, and comfortable – imagine a deep hug from someone you love. Experiment with which limb your baby wants you to start with.

Repeat the hold for up to three times in one spot, then move up the arm or leg towards the body. Squeeze and release as you change position. Sometimes just the initial hold is enough – you’ll find out what your baby likes and responds best to. And if there are two of you, you can both work, either one on the legs and one the arms, or a leg or arm each.

If you prefer, here’s a video where Nicky Bateman and mum Charlotte demonstrate how to do The Embracing Squeeze.

This technique is taken from the Masgutova Neurosensorymotor Integration Reflex Integration method.
